Text: Salas and Hille's Calculus
Special note for students not in my class last quarter:
We'll be starting with section 7.7 -- if you've switched from a
section that didn't get this far, you'll have some catching up to do.
Before the first exam I'll give you copies of the tests from last two
quarters so you'll have a better idea of what to expect.
Course Outline:
The goal is to give a rigorous introduction to single variable
calculus. The theoretical part of calculus (definitions, theorems,
and proofs) will be covered along with mere computational techniques.
This quarter, we'll begin by studying various techniques of integration
(the rest of chapter 7 and chapter 8). Then in chapter 10, we'll look
at some foundational properties of the real numbers (including a proof
of our friend, the Intermediate Value Theorem), as well as convergence
of sequences and improper integrals. In chapter 11 we'll study
series, learning things like 1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 + 1/16 + ... = 1.
Exams:
There will be two in-class midterm exams and a final. The first
midterm will be the Friday of fourth week, April 25. The second will
probably be sometime eighth week. The final will be Wednesday, June
11 from 10:30 - 12:30. Makeup exams will only be given in cases
of extreme human tragedy.
Homework:
There will be two homework sets per week. The first set will be
given out on Monday and due Friday of the same week. The second will
be given out on Wednesday and collected the following Monday. You may
turn in one assignment as much as one week late. Further late
assignments will not be accepted. You are allowed, nay encouraged, to
work together on homework problems. However, you must write up your
solutions individually.
Our grader uses the following system for grading the HW: Each problem
is worth five points. If the correct answer is given but sufficient
work is not shown, 3 to 4 points are taken off (i.e. a score of 2/5 or
1/5 is given). If an incorrect answer is given but work is shown and
serious effort expended, then 1 or 2 points will be taken off. No
credit is given for doing the wrong problem. If there are multiple
sheets of paper, they should be stapled (2 point penalty for failure).
Grading policy:
I will not follow a rigid predetermined formula for
determining grades. However, as a first approximation, homework will
be worth about 20% of the final grade, each midterm 20% and the final
40%.
Problem Session:
There will be a problem session for this class, at 7:00 on
Thursdays in Eckhart 203. Attendance is optional, but
encouraged.
Office Hours:
My office hours will be: Tue. 11:00-12:30, Wed. 1:30 - 3:00, Thurs.
11:00-12:00, Friday 1:30-2:20, and by appointment. For an appointment,
talk to me after class, send me e-mail, or stop by my office. My
office is in Math-Stat which is a three story brick building located
at 5727 S. University Ave., on the east side of the street across from
Mandel Hall. The entrance is on the north side of the building. My
office, number 302, is within sight of the top of the stairs, with
lots of comics on the door.
College Academic Tutors:
In addition to problem sessions and my office hours, there is another
place you can go for help. The College Academic Tutors (I'll tell you
their schedules as soon as I know) are available for help in the
evening. You are welcome to visit the tutors for assistance with
difficulties in the course or with homework.
